For this week's Illustration Friday theme: Moon.

Upon hearing the topic, the first thing that came to mind was the Chinese story of the woman on the moon. I heard it when I was a child and it was weird for me to suddenly recall the story, since I haven't thought about it for years. This is my take on the woman on the moon and her rabbit friend, holding their elixirs. And they're both sitting on an entirely inaccurate piece of the moon. It's not even round, for goodness' sake.

If you don't know the myth, read up.

Pop Song.

I've always quite liked this line from Pulp's "Babies": "I only went with her 'cause she looks like you". I remember hearing the song for the first time and just marveling at the beauty of that punchline. So here's my take on it, complete with more striped stockings.

For this week's Illustration Friday theme: Poem.

In middle school, I got hooked on Dorothy Parker. Something about her dark humor really caught my eye. My English teacher said that she knew I'd like Parker. I'm not really sure what that implied. Anyway, "I might as well live" comes from Parker's poem "Resume".

She's holding an empty bottle of poison because I can't draw a proper noose, apparently.

For this week's Illustration Friday theme: Discovery.

For some reason, the word made me immediately think of sharing music with friends, discovering new bands while splitting the crappy iPod headphones.

Speaking of music, I feel the need to share some albums that recently have been getting steady play on my iPod. It's all stuff that I gave a try on a whim and never expected to like. As it turns out, they're all right. Nancy Sinatra's "Boots", Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black", and Charlotte Gainsbourg's "5:55" (Air and Jarvis Cocker do good stuff on that album, so look into it). Fun Fact: My iPod's name is Orpheus. And the iPod Mini I had before Orpheus was named Dante. He was pink.

I can't decide if the mistake is the fact she's been painted into a corner or that outfit. What can I say? I like weird clothing combinations.

Again with the striped stockings.

Universal People.
Originally uploaded by Annie Matronic
I took my friend from New York to Universal Studios the other day. We did all the tourist-y things that were new to her but old to me. So as she enjoyed everything for the first time, I sat back and relaxed, drawing tourists and perfecting my squiggly lines.

I skipped both Illustration Friday and Illustration Friday Night last week, despite being really excited about both topics. Why? Because I'm lazy. But the time didn't (completely) go to waste. I've been trying to work more with straight-up pen and ink, instead of following my usual method of inking over pencil sketches and losing the initial energy in the process. It's a tremendous pain because I think everything looks extra-ridiculous. I guess I'll stick to it though... From what I've heard, the practice will pay off and everything will look pretty. Eventually.

Oh, and speaking of pretty... Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was very, very, very pretty. It was right up there with Prisoner of Azkaban, actually. As my friends drooled over the grown-up Hogwarts schoolboys and schoolgirls, I was fascinated by all the typography. Beautiful choices. I'm not sure if this is true, but I heard that one of the restaurants at Universal has a view of the in-process Hogwarts castle, by the way. I looked, but failed to spot it.

I'm posting this to prove that I have been drawing/sketching other things than just Illustration Friday topics.

I was inking this while watching the Concert for Diana, waiting to see Ricky Gervais and Mackenzie Crook. Nelly Furtado started singing "Maneater" and I was like, "Hey, this girl kind of looks the type to be a maneater!" Then my cousin was like, "Who are you talking to?" and then I was like, "Nobody, cousin. What the hell are you doing in Florida?" and then my cousin was like, "My presence is just a product of your sleep deprivation. Bye" and then I was like, "Bye" and then I ate a granola bar that tasted like Play-dough.

But yeah. I like this drawing, but I wish I hadn't tried to get all crazy by putting stripes on her stockings. Lesson: Don't try too hard.

I was originally planning on doing something crazy, but nothing came out right. But then I started drawing this little lady and although she's far from the much more fun image I had in mind, I like her.

No reference, so I apologize for the slightly wonky proportions. Oh, she's eating a chocolate bar because I watched all the episodes of Death Note within two days and I had L and Mello on the brain.

A few of you have asked about my music project. Yes, I am still doing it. Yes, I've completed some more drawings. No, they haven't been uploaded yet because I'm a very lazy person. Yes, I am open to song suggestions (just leave them in the comments somewhere) but no, I cannot promise to do all of the songs. And yes, I am excited about the Spice Girls re-union. DON'T JUDGE ME.
